Facebook To Lose Its Gift Shop

Facebook is planning to close down its “Gift Shop” feature on August 1. In a surprising move that would disappoint many Facebook fans, Facebook has decided to stop its virtual gift shop feature, that let users present a icon of cake during B’day and other such funny and humorous icons, by the end of this month. But gifts that have been received previously will remain on the wall. According to Jared Morgenstern, Facebook’s product manager for games and credits, on a blog post “Closing the Gift Shop may disappoint many of the people who have given millions of gifts, but we made the decision after careful thought about where we need to focus our product development efforts. We’ll be able to focus more on improving and enhancing products and features that people use every day, such as Photos, News Feed, Inbox, games, comments, the “Like” button and the Wall.” The Gift Shop, which was launched in 2007, offers dozens of virtual presents at a cost of one dollar each which users purchase using Facebook Credits. In the beginning stages virtual gifts created a rage on Facebook and were pretty much the company’s only source of revenue, long before the addition of advertising and social games like Farmville. Well, all good things must come to an end. Though, one surely does wonder whether Facebook users will start a community to stop the “gift shop” from closing down.

Cakewalk & Intel – Creating Music Superstars

What I like best about technology is what creative people do with it. And now – Cakewalk and Intel have teamed up to give everyone with a PC and access to the internet (and musical talent) the opportunity to be a star. Songwriters – click the picture or jump on Intel’s Facebook site, and you’ll be able to register as an artist and upload your music for a chance to win recording software and gear, some great computer hardware, and…cash – not to mention you’ll have a great platform to be heard. Not quite up to uploading your own creations yet? No problem. In a few weeks you’ll also be able to register as a fan, listen to what’s been uploaded, and vote for your favorite song/artist.  Keep checking back to watch your favorites rise up the charts – and, once the top contenders have been picked – see who takes home the grand prize at the end. While Facebook provides the “face” for the contest, a lot of internet-savy musicians and fans will recognize OurStage as the underlying platform for the contest itself – they’ve long been a favorite hangout for musicians and outlet for great original music. Not only is this a very cool contest – what’s amazing to me is that the technology around PCs and music recording software like Cakewalk’s Sonar has come so far a contest like this is even possible. It doesn’t seem that long ago I was paying $1000 or more to create one halfway decent song demo – or singing in demo sessions that cost $15K and more – again, for one song demo. The only multitrack recording software I could afford  barely did more than sync all my outboard gear more or less reliably - and forget about recording directly to my hard drive.   Now you can buy a Core-based machine and professional-grade multitrack recording software for less than it used to cost to record a piano-vocal demo in a pro studio.  You can record multiple tracks, access sampled orchestras from your hard drive, and apply affects to your tracks with latencies so low, it’s practically real time. In other words, if you have the ear and the talent, you don’t need a ton of cash to build yourself a home studio that rocks. Man. Anyway – songwriter or music fan – definitely check out the Superstar contest! Read the official Press Release here . And…even more on Blackweb .

Facebook Applications To Ask Permission

Facebook is all set to roll out a new privacy feature after complaints of their original Privacy policy refuse to die down. In their new move to protect the information of users, Facebook has roped in their third part application that provides games and other features to its users. Facebook’s applications will now have to ask the permission of the user before it can use the individuals Facebook data. Initially applications already had to ask users for permission to access anything in their profiles that wasn’t public. But these services didn’t have to specify what information they were using. Such information can include your photos, your friends’ birthdays or your e-mail address. Now, applications will have to specify to users the information that they will use or look into. But, it doesn’t give users a chance to pick the information it wants share neither does it allow the user to proceed without sharing. This new move according to Bret Taylor, provides more transparency to users on how Facebook and its third party applications operates. Thought the move was welcomed by critics they still fell that Facebook could still improve on its privacy policy.
