Internet services enter Television world

Google along with its partner Logitech have presented Google TV , an attempt to bridge the gap between the internet and the TV worlds. Logitech has developed the Revue, a set top box worth $299 for Google TV.   Investing huge funds into Google TV has not helped Logitech much as it managed to sell only $5 million of its devices as compared to its expectations of selling $18 million of its Google TV related products. Although sales have gone up by 4%, Logitech’s operating income has reduced from $24.5 million last year to $3.6 million. Google has not been able to sell Google TV probably because of its high costs, users lodging complaints about not being user friendly and  having an array of bugs. Google has tried to help users fix some of these problems and the latest news says that Google would merge with Android Honeycomb and Gingerbread to develop one multifaceted OS. This could escalate sales of Google TV by using a simpler process. Android apps on the big screen, especially games could be lot of fun and Google must also work towards price reduction to survive in this competitive world. But many customers may just not want web on their TV screen and more so if Google’s tech support is horrible.

Microsoft’s Online Services face stiff competition

Microsoft, the software company best known for Microsoft Windows OS and Microsoft Office software has declared that their Online Service Division revenue has grown by about 14% every year.     While revenue growth is indicated what the company has not disclosed is that the company’s income has been actually slipping down year after year. Microsoft actually lost $726 billion in the Online Service Division and this quarter seems to be their worst in the two years. If only Microsoft could have scrapped their online services they would have been far ahead of Apple in terms of profits. By pumping funds into Online Service Microsoft is looking towards its growth in the future. But the two key components of their business Windows and Office have failed  to appeal users thus forcing the company to incur such losses. Over the past year the company has lost $2.5 billion in Online Service Division. Google has definitely surpassed Microsoft through AdSense revenue. Blaming a company as big as Microsoft is not fair more so when their revenue growth is high. A chance exists that Microsoft might someday cut down on spending to increase profits in this division.

Square captures larger markets

Square, a mobile payment company  offers i Phones,  Android and an i Pad app permits  merchants to process credit cards transaction  by using a handy card swiping machine that can be attached to the headset/microphone jack.   By entering into a lucrative deal with Visa , the credit card giant it plans bit time growth. However the company declines to reveal the investments made by Visa .It would be a major boost to Square’s business prospests. Apple treads into iCloud domain

Sources have revealed that Steve Jobs has purchased the domain name icloud.com f rom a Swedish company Xcerion, the leading cloud OS provider with its service icloud. Incidently Xcerion has changed the name of icloud service to CloudMe.   While Xcerion explains the name change to increase cross browser  facilities, speed and  stability to enable various clients to interact with  users files,  the fact that Apple has purchased iCloud.com for $4.5 million only indicates the company’s entry into cloud based media storage. Both Apple and Xcerion have not confirmed this purchase officially and whether Apple would use this brand name is not known.  Apple probably bought iCloud.com to find themselves in the best position on the new cloud market. Being a web based operating system, icloud  contains a XML virtual machine within the browser which makes applications  execute locally , even offline. Apple’s massive expansion of its data centre in North Carolina showcases its revenue generation for the next 5 years. This ‘new iCloud market’ is anyway quite old now and Apple is a late entrant to the party. But Apple has the brand name and the necessary resources to buy anything and everything.

Amazon’s intuitive growth plans

With its booming business Amazon released its first quarter earnings this week. While its sales have increased by 38%, it income decreased by 33%, because of its massive recruitment drive and operating expenses.   The company earned only 44 cents per share which is far below than the 61 cents per share predicted by the share analysts. While Amazon explains this by saying that it in pouring funds into Web services and new office space, it is seen that the company is routing bulk of its expenses on hiring people. In Q1 2010, Amazon had 26,100 employees work in full -time and part- time and in Q4 2010 it simply rose to 37,900.A 45% increase in workforce within a year is astonishing. The pace at which the company has been launching new products like Cloud player, Android  app  store , NFC mobile payment market  and $114 ad –supported  kindle  answers for increasing expenses. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos wants to focus on long term growth and desires to create new revenue sources. The company does not wish to compete with other tech giants Apple and Google as it  has already earned the reputation of the best designed web site on the web.
