Social media tends to get a bad rap in the B2B space. You may have heard from colleagues that Twitter is all about what people had for lunch, and Facebook is the place where you go to make sure your career is better than your high school ex’s career. Thank goodness for LinkedIn; without it B2B folks would be completely left out of social networking, right? In reality, all social networking sites hold potential for B2B marketers. Each site has its own personality and needs a strategy unique to the audience and community activity on those sites. Consider this: Social media was the leading “emerging channel” for lead generation in 2010, according to Unisfair. The same study found 61 percent of U.S. marketers use social media to increase lead generation. It’s only gone upwards from there in terms of potential. In March, Salesforce.com acquired Radian6 , bringing the potential of the social web into lead generation. Even more recently, Facebook issued its long-awaited IPO, solidifying its place as the globally established social platform. Facebook With 845 million users worldwide, Facebook has grown so large that it’s difficult to think of it as a private community. It’s also not your college kid’s Facebook anymore. More than 35 percent of users are ages 35 and above, according to the site’s spring demographics report. So, chances are your future leads are spending time here. There are several strategies for networking on Facebook. Your brand might consider creating a page where users can choose to associate themselves with you. This is true for many consumer brands, as well as a growing list of B2B companies who seek out targeted audiences. Also, consider a highly targeted Facebook ad with an evocative headline that drives traffic to your website. Careful keyword selection means the ad will only appear to people with interests aligned with your company. You may wish to try starting a page on Facebook for professionals in your industry and pointing your ad here. Like a LinkedIn group, this community would be a forum for your potential clients to exchange ideas with limited marketing from you, but, over time it would give you a real-time glimpse into the minds of your clients and industry. Twitter With its heavy emphasis on searchability, Twitter is a great way to keep up with news in your industry and to hear real-time feedback from your customers, especially during events like industry conferences. But how do you sort the tweets from the chaff? If you are not fortunate enough to have a paid Salesforce and Radian6 tool at your company, use Tweetdeck and set up a search for your company, and particular hashtags such as #HealthIT, that are unique to your industry, competitors, or even influential folks in your industry. Follow people who could be possible leads and tweet or RT good bits of information. Use a tool like Follower Wonk to search for users in your industry. Blogs As an inbound marketing channel, blogs cost far less than outbound, often paid, marketing. Blogs also greatly increase the search engine optimization (SEO) for your site while creating excellent content for your clients. Learn more about SEO from Google’s Search Engine Starter Guide. Consider hiring a copywriter to create blog content if you’re not comfortable doing so. Good content is worth the money paid to a professional writer–your web content is often your potential customer’s first impression of you. Make that impression count, then be sure to measure the increase in inbound links you receive as a result of a successful blogging program. LinkedIn A dominant social network like Facebook, LinkedIn has dozens of groups for B2B folks to network and exchange information. Consider starting your own group for current customers of your product to exchange ideas or network with each other. This would be a good place to collect testimonials and customer service inquiries. You might consider starting a group for individuals in your specific profession. Like the Facebook page, this would be an excellent place to get into the heads of future leads. Google+ A relative newcomer on the social networking scene, Google+ seeks to bring together popular features like photo sharing and commenting and make them easy to access for Google aficionados and those who prefer Android mobile devices. In addition, Google+ has added a unique feature that is perfect for B2B networking: Circles. Companies who open brand pages on Google+ can invite users to place themselves in Circles defined by their interests. It’s a great way to allow your audience to learn about your company and then self-select what they are most interested in. Then, you can send communications and messages tailored to the needs of individuals in each Circle. There are many more resources online regarding lead gen and social media. The purpose here is to provide an overview of what’s possible. If you are serious about social networking on behalf of your company, you may want to follow blogs that cover this topic regularly . 5 Effective Ways to Use Twitter for Business

When using Twitter for business, you want to keep in mind that you’re building relationships. It’s a dance with people you can’t see and who may or may not end up being future customers or clients. Here are 5 ways to use Twitter in order to build your company’s presence: 1 – Keep your ears open. Use Twitter Search to ‘listen’ for your company’s name, your competitors’ names, and keywords for your business. You can search via a specific Twitter handle (@Intel), regular name (Intel), or through hashtag terms (#techninnovation). It’s a way to eavesdrop without being rude. Search allows you to stay on top of current trends, know the good and the bad of what people are saying about you, and deal with potential problems before they become major headaches. 2 – Have a personal touch for the company account. Show the Twitter handles of the real people who are posting for the company account. For example, the SAP (@SAP) profile says: The official Twitter feed of SAP. All Tweets by @SocialKev unless otherwise noted . It lets your audience know they’re having real conversations. If you only list one name, makes sure to update the profile when responsibility shifts due to holidays, vacations, sick days, and so on. 3 – Keep self-promotion to a minimum. Focus the majority of your tweets on something other than talk about how great your company is. Share links to articles, websites, and videos applicable to your market. Retweet tweets that you find particularly helpful or insightful. Sharing goes a long way to building your audience, and it’s an easy way to keep getting your company out there in the twitterverse. 4 – Create excitement and enthusiasm by tweeting updates while at a company event or a company-sponsored event.  For instance, if your company is represented at a trade show, tweet about a speaker ( John Smith from @CompanyA just shared the top 3 money making tips for mid-size businesses. ) Tweet about big name presenters, share tips and information you receive from other attendees. Share highlights you find particularly exciting ( Just had lunch with Jen Cruz of @MajorCorporation, new leads generated for both of us! ) Sharing updates at a large event can attract a lot of interest in your company, especially if the event uses a hashtag (#). Every time you Tweet out, include the hashtag symbol and your tweets will be seen by anyone searching on that tag. ( Attending #CorpEvent2012, sold out crowd, great panels scheduled. Venue is spectacular. ) 5 –  Keep the conversation going when someone tweets you or sends you a direct message. Sometimes it’s impossible to reply to everyone, but make an effort. Your responses to tweets get picked up in feeds and that’s more publicity for your company. Direct messages are private between you and the person on the other side of the conversation, but they may be more important that tweets. Twitter is all about building relationships. Seek out people and companies you find interesting, intriguing, and inspiring. And likewise, by tweeting out helpful and engaging information and replying to tweets sent to you, people and businesses will connect with you and your audience will grow. Do you already have a Twitter account? If so, share your Twitter handle so we can follow you! Let us know if you have any questions or additional Twitter tips to share.

VEVO CEO Tries To Explain Their Hypocritical Act Of Piracy At Sundance

Yesterday I reported on a bizarre incident I witnessed at Sundance last month: VEVO, the music portal owned by some of the biggest record labels in the US, had a pirated NFL playoff game playing on screens throughout its ‘PowerStation’venue. The incident was immensely hypocritical, given that VEVO is owned in part by Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment (with EMI licensing its content to the service) — the same music labels that have made a habit of attacking consumers over alleged acts of piracy. Now VEVO CEO Rio Caraeff has written a post to the VEVO blog, where he tries to explain what happened. In it, he writes that the game was accessed and streamed by a guest of the event without VEVO’s knowledge. A guest of our lounge asked for an NFL game to be aired. We said no. There was a laptop hooked up to VEVO.com that fed into the large TV screens around the bar. Unfortunately, the laptop was easily accessible to the public. That was our mistake for not making sure the laptop was more secure. While VEVO staff was in other areas of the venue, the game was put on – via a website transmitting ESPN’s broadcast of the NFL game – without our permission or knowledge. As soon as we realized the game was airing to the room, we removed it and went back to playing VEVO videos. The game was not aired in its entirety. Rest assured, we rectified this mistake as soon as we became aware what was going on. What happened was unfortunate and we can’t take back what happened. I don’t have any proof to indicate that what Caraeff writes is incorrect, but I’m raising my eyebrow at this explanation. The game was playing the entire time I was at the PowerStation — this wasn’t just a brief blip — and it was playing on several screens, so it was hard to miss, too. After all, one of the key aims of this event was to feature VEVO videos, it wasn’t as if these screens were hidden in a corner. Likewise, this wasn’t a case of someone launching the stream and walking away — I saw the mouse cursor appear onscreen at least twice, and someone was pretty clearly doing their best to make sure it was watchable. That said, as you can see toward the end of the video below at around 1:39, the computer was potentially accessible to non-employees. But it was hardly inviting, and I have a hard time believing a random guest could just commandeer the computer without any employees noticing. In any case, imagine what the music industry would say were it on the other side of this. Is there any doubt it would dismiss these explanations and, lawsuits in hand, cry foul over such an overt act of piracy? And, as our comments point out — this seems no different than an accused pirate explaining that they left their Wifi open, only to have it used by someone else to download content illegally. Below you’ll find Caraeff’s whole post. You may know we had some fun at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah last month. Our VEVO Powerstation & Sorel Suite was a popular spot for celebrities to get warm, pick up some gifts from our friends at Sorel and Fresh and, most of all, to relax with a drink and play their favorite VEVO videos. We were excited that LMFAO, James Mardsen, Lil Jon, Tommy Lee, Isla Fisher, Josh Kelley and many others all came down to watch some music with us. But with all the snowy fun we had, there has unfortunately been a report that something other than VEVO music videos was played at the Powerstation. We feel it important to explain exactly what happened so we hope you’ll take a minute to read further. Let’s just make this clear. VEVO is not in the business of streaming illegal video content. We work really hard to give our fans access to the best HD music videos and original programming – legally. VEVO takes intellectual property and copyright issues very seriously. We have always supported our artists and content owners and have the same respect for all content creators in every industry and of every art form. So we are very sensitive to what happened at Sundance and the issues it has raised. Thanks for reading. Rio D. Caraeff

AIAIAI’s New Headphones Continue Trend Of Understated Design

We don’t design and hardware quite as much as we used to, but I’m making an exception for these. A good while back, I wrote about a pair of headphones I thought was the most understated and attractive I’d ever seen. They were the TMA-1s from Danish design house AIAIAI, and while I never got to get my hands on them, I’m going to make it my business to try their new pair out. Capital is the name of the new headset, and they’re a larger, over-ear, more heavily-designed piece of work. But I still love them — especially the black version. To be fair, they have lost some of the understatement that made the TMA-1s so interesting to me. The Capital has more pieces, more design elements, more flair. But they’re still simply and beautifully made, from fiberglass-reinforced nylon, with 40mm drivers and a folding design for travel. They’re being shown at the Agenda trade show in LA today, so if you’re heading down there, be sure to drop by AIAIAI and congratulate them for me. We’re on our way to CES, where design is not a primary concern, and I’m pretty sure we won’t see anything quite as excellent and utilitarian as this.

Secrets Of The Accidental Entrepreneur

His latest book is  I Was Blind But Now I See . You can follow him @jaltucher . I was in a meeting with Uri Geller . You know who he is. He’s the psychic that bends spoons. He’s been doing it since he was a kid. Marvel Comics even did an issue once where Uri Geller was helping out Daredevil. The cover has Daredevil wearing an extremely tight uniform where you could see the outline of his genitalia (putting it delicately for SOPA Nazis). Daredvil was swinging around punching people while Uri Geller (“the Most Shocking Guest Star of All” according to the cover) was melting tanks. So now Uri Geller was sitting right in front of me pitching a business. That’s the way I roll. First there were the demos. Uri (“call me Uri”) gave me a 3

Task Coach 1.2.26

Task Coach is a simple open source todo manager to manage personal tasks and todo lists. It grew out of my frustration that well-known task managers, such as those provided with Outlook or Lotus Notes, do not provide facilities for composite tasks. Often, tasks and other things todo consist of several activities. Task Coach is designed to deal with composite tasks. Features: Creating, editing, and deleting tasks and subtasks. Tasks have a subject, description, priority, start date, due date and a completion date. Tasks can be viewed as a list or as a tree. Tasks can be sorted by all task attributes, e.g. subject, budget, budget left, due date, etc. Several filters to e.g. hide completed tasks or view only tasks that are due today. Task status depends on its subtask and vice versa. E.g. if you mark the last uncompleted subtask as completed, the parent task is automatically marked as completed too. Tasks can be assigned to user-defined categories. Settings are persistent and saved automatically. The last opened file is loaded automatically when starting Task Coach. Track time spent on tasks. Tasks can have a budget. Time spent can be viewed by individual effort period, by day, by week, and by month. The Task Coach file format (.tsk) is XML. What´s New in version 1.2.26: Bugs fixed: Checking an already checked mutually exclusive subcategory now unchecks it. (3377145) Task Coach would not start on PPC Macs. (3388666) Saving a task as template would not work if the subject or description contains non-ascii characters Fix case insensitive searching with non-ascii languages.3395268 The recent searches menu in the search control wasn’t working properly on Mac OS X. Features Added: Importing and exporting of Todo.txt format task files. Todo.txt is an open source todo list manager that works with plain text files. Todo.txt Touch is a version of Todo.txt for the Android platform, that syncs with Dropbox. By exporting your tasks to a todo.txt file in your Dropbox folder, you can then edit them on your Android device with Todo.txt Touch. See the help contents for more information. (http://uservoice.com/a/6Z54H, http://uservoice.com/a/ceNES) Automatic importing and/or exporting on every save. This can be turned on in the preferences dialog. Currently only possible for the Todo.txt format. When turning on the stop date and time in the effort edit dialog, set the date and time to the current date and time. (http://uservoice.com/a/iFkds) When editing templates, one can now also edit subtasks. Remember the last visited path when choosing a file attachment. (http://uservoice.com/a/jz5dE) Support times in addition to dates when importing from CSV. Features Changed: The maximum of the number of hours that tasks are considered ‘due soon’ is now a big number instead of a mere 90.
