iPhone’s new app – GPRS to give users exact directions

iphone now has another innovative app. Launched by Meridian, this app functions as an indoor GPRS system to save users the trouble of wandering in crowded areas. This app comes from Meridian, product of the Portland based “Spotlight Mobile”. It saves the users the effort of physically traveling in search of seats, items etc in malls, stadiums, theaters and other such crowded areas. This app has a plug in that gives the user exact, turn by turn directions from his original destination to his preferred venue. Initially it has started with just two locations : Powell’s Books in Portland and The Portland Art Museum. But the creator, Kiyo Kobo has all the right ingredients for an advertiser’s appeal and would soon become popular. The company might also announce an an Android version of the app in the months to come. Though there are various issues regarding its accuracy and feasibility, it can’t be denied that this app does have a huge marketing potential. A civilian GPS has the precision of only 20 meters which may not be sufficient for this app but it sure is another digital break through.

Initially iPad 2 was to release in Japan on 25 th march but Apple has indicated in its message to “All Things Digital” that the country and the company’s staff in Japan should concentrate on the issues at hand. Apple has declared that it wants its staff in Japan to to focus on recovering from the recent disasters and has extended full support and help to all its members and their families. The company has still not decided on a new launch date. The recent disasters in Japan is likely to effect the company iPad production as Toshiba makes their NAND flash chips and Toshiba’s plant has closed down. There is no announcement of its reopening.

iPad 2 sold out mostly to new users

It has been evaluated by Piper Jaffrey’s analyst Gene Munster who had been keeping a close watch on all the apple stores that the iPad 2 has been entirely sold out. It has been recorded that iPad 2 sold between 4 lac to 5 lac. This number is higher than the original iPad’s sale in its first week. The original iPad had sold around 3 lac and the sale of iPad 2 is easily a lac more than that. There were more than 250 buyers waiting in line to buy the iPad2. It has also been estimated that 70% of these were new to this device, 51% were Mac users and 49% PC users. Over 50% also owned an iPhone. Only around 5% planned to use the iPad2 for reading. Apple always shares its numbers on its official website and these figures can be confirmed only when the company makes an official announcement regarding it. Bu tover all th eusers believe that the iPad 2 has a class and standard of its own. The users are all excited about the various applications that this new device promises to support.

Steve Jobs finally introduces Apple’s iPad 2

Apple’s chief executive, Steve Jobs, finally unveiled Apple’s iPad 2. He was met with an enthusiastic and awestruck audience at the Yerba Buena Theater to introduce the next-generation iPad. The crowd gave him a standing ovation and thunderous applause to showcase their appreciation for his determination and passion. Though it retains iPad 1 screen size with 9.7-inch LED-backlit display and the same RAM of 256M, the iPad 2 is 33% thinner and 15% lighter than its predecessor. iPad 2 features both front- and rear-facing video cameras to enable video chat. The back camera supports video recording, HD (720p) up to 30 frames per second with audio. While on front there is VGA-quality still camera. The iPad 2 uses “A 5 chip” which increases the speed and graphic display by nine times. This also enable multi-tasking, video recording, FaceTime video calls and loads apps faster. iPad 2 comes with a SmartCover that Apple claims has built-in magnets for a fit that not just protects. On closing Smart Cover, iPad automatically goes off to sleep. Open it, and iPad instantly wakes up (there is just no need to press any buttons). Also, SmartCover folds into a perfect typing stand. Its magnetic hinge holds iPad in place so that users can type quickly and comfortably. Is can also be set up for hands-free video calling or watching.

Apple’s I- Pad 2: Features and Expectations

Apple will finally debut the iPad 2 at a San Francisco event on March 2, sources claim. Since the original iPad was released last April, many expect Apple to have the iPad 2 available in that month as well. As with every major Apple device launch, rumors about the iPad 2 have been floating around for some time. So What are the feautures that one can expect the iPad 2 to have? IPad 2 is expected to be smaller with a flat shell as against the previous iPad. It is clear that it will have front and rear cameras. The front camera has a high resolution and will allow users to use FaceTime or Skype whereas the rear camera would allow them to take pictures. It is expected to have a memory of 512MB like that of the iPhone 4. It is almost certain that the iPad 2 will sport a New multi-core “A5″ processor based on Cortex A9 and a high resolution display (2048×1536) The iPad 2 is also expected to have better speaker than the previous models as improving it is cheap and apple has faced lot of criticism against it. The iPad 2 is expected to have an improved processor, storage and so on to make real iPad iLife no longer an impossibility. New iLife and Lion-based apps have fullscreen interfaces that could more easily be transferred to iPad (or be indirectly controlled by one). Finally the apple iPAd 2 is expected to have two cameras, a vastly improved screen and graphics processor, a thinner form factor at the same aspect ratio, better speakers, and possibly an SD card slot.

Smartphones and PCs

There was recent big news that shipments of smartphones passed PCs. So while I don’t believe the PC is dying, I do believe there is a message here. The volumes were interesting too. Smart phone volumes topped 100m units for the first time, while PC units were a still respectable 92m units. So is that the death of the PC? It is true PC shipment growth has slowed in terms of the past, but it still shows respectable growth. IDC stated shipments were 346.2m units in 2010, a 13% growth factor. Overall growth from 2010-2015 is expected to grow 6%, as per IDG . That growth curve yields roughly 450m units in 2015 for the PC market. Any more growth, and 500m units is possible. A market that is 500m units is not a small market. PCs are a valuable tool for many businesses and many people. And it looks very likely to stay that way. What is more possible in the PC market is the pressure on desktop sales as laptops (and net books) become powerful enough for many “knowledge workers”. That puts pressure on ASPs for the silicon manufacturers and on design teams, but doesn’t change the fact that there is a bit market out there. What we are seeing, then,in my opinion isn’t the death of the PC. It’s the emergence of something new. Cell phones aren’t new. And smart phones aren’t particularly new. But the level of experience Apple brought to the market with the iPhone, and the integration of services in iOS and the SDK provided to developers are new, as is the idea of a central shopping place for customers in the app stores. And Google’s response with Android created a market stratification similar to what existed in the PC market years ago. Apple took their usual path and created a controlled, garden and closed market. Google took the Microsoft path with their uncontrolled and somewhat chaotic open market. The space Google carved out in the mobile market is the space that used to be owned by Microsoft. It took Microsoft 3 years to respond, and Windows Phone 7 was a worthy response, but it remains to be seen if there can be 2 or more players in either the closed or open markets. That feels new to me. And the level of experience has energized the smart phone market. It used to be that smartphones were 10% or so of the market. In 2008, in Q2 smart phone sales were 32.2m units , with total sales of 139m units. In 2009, they were 17%, roughly 170m units of smart phones out of roughly 1b total units. Thats 50% growth. Last year, they were roughly 20% , about 350m units so smartphone sales almost doubled last year. Streaming and location services are offering personalized services like never before. With streaming services like Pandora and Last.fm, you can get a personalized music stream on your device, whenever you want. With location-based services you can get turn-by-turn navigation for car travel and unique services like applications that use your GPS location and geo-tagged businesses to tell you what bars, restaurants, cultural, or entertainment venues are near you when you walk around. These types of services are new things that were not offered so easily to the masses in the past, and the level of convenience they provide is part of that new experience. And those aren’t the only ones, just two quick examples. These examples speak to part of the integration of services in the smart phone operating systems, as well as how well they are exposed to developers in the device SDKs. And the idea of an “app store” where the platform owner provides a built-in ecosystem to reach the consumer is also very new. So in a extremely rapid manner, developer ecosystems have sprung up. Having started Windows programming in 1987 with Windows 1.03 and having lived through how long it took both the Mac and Windows ecosystems to become well-formed – this is unusually fast. So I am sure some of you out there are asking yourselves “very interesting Phil but what does this have to do with gaming and graphics samples from Intel?”. Now, maybe not so much. But over time, quite a bit. Intel is investing heavily in Atom to have a part that is able to address that market. And over time, Atom will be refined to hit the mark. It is already starting to reach where it needs to be, and the design wins that are starting to appear are an existence proof of that. And over time you can expect to see that focus be reflected in the gaming and graphics samples. First, we need to take care of home base, the PC. And this first year you can expect that to be our target. Over time, though, it should not be unexpected to see this team “dip their toes” in the Atom/device space and as that space becomes an increasingly important market to Intel that the gaming and graphics samples would adjust to include that space as a target. How fast and how much, it is too early to talk to. But over time adding this space should not be a surprise. I’d be interested in hearing in the comments what sort of samples developers feel would be helpful in that space. While this isn’t a commitment to implement what we hear in any dialog, it is always good to listen to the customer. And don’t be afraid of radical suggestions. For instance, would standardizing on OpenGL-ES even on the desktop be useful, since that is the standard for devices? OpenGL-ES 1 or 2? How important do developers feel WebGL samples be in 3 years? These are the sorts of discussions I would love to have.

Apple soon to be the most valuable tech company

Founded in April 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne, Apple Inc has now become the most valuable tech company. During March last year Microsoft, the then top tech company stood at a market capital of $261 billion whereas Apple Inc. had a market capital of $208 billion. In may 2010 both the companies had around $227 billion as market capital. In the next nine months Microsoft stagnated at $228 billion whereas Apple Inc. has shot up to a market capital of $330 billion. The market value oh HP is around a $105 billion. To put that in some perspective Apple Inc. is now worth an HP more than every other tech company. Microsoft is being closely followed by Google. The shares of Google have increased by a $100 each and that has helped the company reach to the $200 billion market capital mark. IBM is also near the $200 billion mark with its market capital being at $202 billion. Although Apple Inc is the most valuable tech company, it is still not close to Exxon, the largest private company with a market capital of $422 billion.
